The fireworks over Lake LBJ finished ten nights ago. The visiting boats have mostly gone home. The barbecue smoke off the cook-off site has cleared, and the radios that were tuned to KBEY 103.9 FM for the synchronized fireworks broadcast are back to their usual stations. If you live here, you know what happens next: the town gets its lake back.
That is the part of the Kingsland summer nobody writes about. AquaBoom, the four-day Independence Day celebration Kingsland has been throwing for more than fifty years, is the marquee event, running July 2 through July 5 with fireworks over Lake LBJ as the showstopper. But the second half of July into late August is the better half for residents. The crowd is thinner, the water is warmer, and the calendar is still full enough to plan around. Here is how it actually reads.
What's on the calendar between now and Labor Day
The anchor is the Wakepoint Open on the last day of July. Everything else is a rotation of live music, small-format nights at neighborhood spots, and one trail race across the county line.

The 2026 Wakepoint Open, billed as a top pro and amateur wakeboarding event in Texas, runs Friday, July 31 starting at 8:00 AM at 14757 W. RM 1431. If your dock is west of the Wakepoint cove, plan for boat traffic that morning and give the competition water a wide berth until the finals wrap. Locals who want to watch without loading a boat can walk the shoreline from the property side; the sightlines from land are better than most people expect.
BTBB at 151 Melodie Ln has become the reliable Friday and Saturday room this summer. The August lineup includes Train Wreck Shipping Company on Friday, August 14, Joel Tucker on Saturday, August 22, and Sky Zito Band on Saturday, August 29, each starting at 6:00 PM. The rooms are small enough that showing up an hour early actually matters.
The one item worth putting on the calendar now, even though it sits just past the season, is the Hill Country Triple Trail Run at Camp Buckner on Saturday, September 5 starting at 6:00 AM. Registration for the Labor Day weekend races tends to close earlier than people remember.
Where residents eat when the parking lots empty out
Kingsland's dining bench is deeper than the visiting-boat crowd ever sees, because the visiting-boat crowd tends to eat within a hundred yards of where they tied up. Once the marina lots thin, the rest of the map opens.
The current Yelp shortlist for Kingsland proper reads: Junction Prime, Patio 2900 at Boat Town, Hooper's, Sal's NY Italian Kitchen of Kingsland, The Potato Shack, Boat Town Burger Bar, Alfredo's Mexican Restaurant, with Reverend Jim's Dam Pub and la tequila jalisco rounding out the ten. That is not a tourism list. That is the Tuesday-through-Thursday rotation for people who live here.
Junction Prime is the local answer to "we need somewhere for a birthday." One recent diner described it as a pricey but well-presented steakhouse where the dry-aged cuts land hard and the baked potatoes come out of a salt bath. Cocktail service is worth pacing yourself for.
Hooper's is the only restaurant in town where the building is the story. Located in the heart of Kingsland just moments from Lake LBJ, Hooper's occupies the restored 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie house and is named for filmmaker Tobe Hooper, with a scratch kitchen serving Southern-inspired plates. Weekend brunch is the move if you are showing anyone around who has never been.
Patio 2900 at Boat Town is the one where you can actually arrive by boat, and locals do. Boat Town Burger Bar next door handles the shorter version of the same appetite. La Tequila is the standing weekly stop for a lot of Kingsland households, running an authentic Mexican menu with weekend music that turns a Friday check-in into a two-hour meal without anyone planning it that way.
Three newer arrivals worth a first visit this month
Two of these opened recently enough that even long-time residents haven't tried them yet.
Fair Portions Restaurant & Catering. Opened in 2026 and, per the local visitor board, already drawing rave reviews for savory, made-to-order breakfasts, entrees, and sweet desserts. Breakfast is the honest test for a new Kingsland kitchen because Kingsland already has strong breakfast incumbents. Worth the visit.
Novel Brews. A coffee-and-books hybrid described as a fusion of coffee and books. The right room for a Sunday morning after a Saturday on the water.
Queen D's Court. Not brand new, but under-visited by residents who default to the same three breakfast spots. In the heart of historic downtown Kingsland with a diverse menu starting with hearty breakfast favorites. A useful third option when the first two have a wait.
A working rule of thumb: any Kingsland restaurant with a Lake LBJ view runs 20 to 40 minutes longer at the table on a Friday or Saturday between now and mid-August. If you are eating on a schedule, book inland.
The Wakepoint Open weekend, read the way a resident should read it
The last Friday of July is the one weekend left this summer where Kingsland feels the way it felt during AquaBoom, minus the fireworks. Wakeboarders and their families fill the FM 1431 corridor from mid-morning through the finals. The Spot at Wakepoint runs live music that same night with George Gurganus at 7:30 PM. That is a lot of people funneled onto one stretch of road.
Two practical reads for anyone who lives close:
- If your errands are on the west side of 1431, do them Thursday. Friday morning traffic between the competition site and the FM 2900 turn is the heaviest non-holiday load the road takes all summer.
- If you want to watch the finals but skip the crowd, come at the tail end. The awards and the last passes happen after most of the day-trippers have loaded their trucks. The room around the water is a different room by 4:00 PM.
The broader point is worth stating plainly. Kingsland's summer is not front-loaded onto the Fourth. The Fourth of July weekend draws the largest number of visitors of any holiday, providing an economic influx to local businesses, which is exactly why the back half of the season is the better half for the people who never left. The venues are still running. The kitchens are still full. The lake is warmer than it was in June. And the parking lots you couldn't get into on July 3rd have three open spots on July 22nd.
That is the trade every resident is quietly making from now through Labor Day, whether they think of it that way or not. The visitors get the fireworks. Residents get the other eight weeks.
